5 Things I LOVED in K-pop: 10/23 – 10/29

It’s the end of October and the biggest scare for Halloween aren’t goblins, witches, or zombies–it’s one heck of a super storm named Sandy.  Be careful and stay safe to all y’all on the East Coast including many of Seoulbeats’ very own. It’s been a busy month as a ton of celebrities left to enter into military service-the last being Leeteuk, Sangchu and Ryu Sang-wook, Kim Jang-hoon released the $1M+ MV for his song “Nothing,” comedian Park Myung-soo and Jung Yeob release the MV for “Was it a Dream,” Korean/Chinese group TimeZ release an MV for “Hooray for Idols,” 100% released “Still Again,” MISS $ said “Goodnight,” Standing Egg revealed a “Perfect Day,” F.T. Island released the PV for “Polar Star,” Girls Day said “Don’t Forget Me,” Byul and Haha are “Cute,” GLAM sings for the Five Fingers OST, and Jang Dong-gun has got STYLE.

The following are the 5 Things that happened in K-pop last week that I think were a tad bit better than the rest.  Spoilers may lie ahead, keep reading at your own risk. (...)

Best of Weekly Music Shows: 10/15 – 10/21

Welcome to another recap of the best performances of this week’s music shows! Just when you thought last week was the week of comebacks, this week we saw comebacks from miss A, Ailee, Seo In-young, Block B, and Epik High, along with a follow up performance by BtoB. Here and there, groups like TOXIC and Wonder Boyz also made their debuts. Below are my favorite performances of the week. Don’t forget to share your favorites in the comments as well!

BtoB’s “I Only Know Love,” KBS Music Bank, Friday, October 19th

The group’s follow up song is giving me some slight trot vibes. If there was a little bit of vocal talent or practice spread out among more group members, this song may have gone straight for direction. But BtoB is clearly growing. They’re still a little rough around the edges, especially when it comes to live performances, but this is a little cleaner than previous performances have been.

K-pop Sub-genres: Get Retro with New Jack Swing

Ever wonder where those catchy rhythms and beats you love originated? Not surprisingly, sometimes the story begins in a country outside of Korean. Back in September, BTOB released their new single “WOW,” and immediately got a response via Twitter from a famous American music producer by the name of Teddy Riley. Riley congratulated BTOB for their impressive use of the genre new jack swing and was eager to collaborate with them. Now, if you are anything like me, you will have absolutely no idea what new jack swing is or who Teddy Riley is, either. Despite that, it was pretty clear from the Tweet trail that this was big news. As it turns out, Riley is no K-pop novice and, consequently, the genre of new jack swing is nothing new either.

So what is new jack swing? It is classified as a fusiongenre that combines the base beats of hip-hop and dance-pop with R&B style beats for the lyrics. It’s creation and development goes back to the 1950’s, but the term itself came about in the late 1980’s, and was directly credited to Teddy Riley himself. If you are at all familiar with US hip-hop and R&B from the late 80’s to early 90’s than you are, by virtue of that, familiar with new jack swing. Some artists you may have heard of that had hit songs that used new jack swing were Madonna, TLC, Janet Jackson, and Michael Jackson. One particularly famous example is Bobby Brown’s song “My Prerogative,” which used signature sounds of new jack swing.

So how did new jack swing make its way into K-pop? Obviously big trends in the Western world make it to Asia eventually, but this music genre has had a bigger influence on K-pop than just a passing fad. It can be argued that it all started with Seo Taiji and his band Seo Taiji and Boys. Their first album, released in 1992, was heavily influenced by new jack swing style beats and brought the genre into the mainstream of K-pop. Although their debut was met with some skepticism, they quickly became one of the most popular groups of the time. Their use of the hip-hop sound and culture, which was fresh and edgy at the time, is something that we see everywhere in K-pop today. Even after Seo Taiji and Boys disbanded, the members continued to spread new jack swing in Korea. The founder of YG entertainment, Yang Goon, was a member of the group and Seo Taiji continues to be a major figure in K-pop, being called “the President of culture” by many.

BTOB isn’t the only recent K-pop group to use new jack swing in their music. SNSD released “The Boys” in 2011 with an English version in order to appeal to a larger international audience. This song had a new jack swing feel to it, which only makes sense since it was co-written by Teddy Riley. Here we begin to see how Riley may have discovered BTOB. Since he had already worked with a K-pop group in the past, he already had links to the industry that would have kept him informed to new groups trying out new jack swing. Although “The Boys” is a catchy song, that has the hip-hop background beat and sexy R&B vocals that are essential to new jack swing, it didn’t quite make it in the US. This may have to do with the more K-pop new jack swing fusion sound instead of a pure new jack swing sound. The video is also very K-pop, which may be a turn-off for US audiences. Lastly, new jack swing isn’t as popular in the US as it once was, and not everyone may enjoy the retro feel of it.

So what about BTOB and “WOW” caught Teddy Riley’s attention? In his own words, BTOB has a “strong heart” for trying out the genre, and “Michael Jackson is proud” of how BTOB used new jack swing in “WOW.” Even over Twitter, those are fairly big compliments coming from a famous producer who has such a history with the genre. The opportunity to work with someone like Teddy Riley would be a huge step forward for a group as new as BTOB and if we judge them solely on their use of new jack swing, than they absolutely deserve a chance to work with a master.

If you listen to all of the videos posted above, you can clearly hear a similarity in the beat that can only be classified as the new jack swing style. What is special about “WOW” is that it has managed to succeed in having a distinctly 80’s – 90’s feel. This may be a reminder that you can’t go wrong with what is tried and true. Michael Jackson, in the US at least, will always be known as a king of pop, so why not try and emulate him? As far as popularity in Korea goes, I think new jack swing will continue to be a good choice in genre for K-pop bands to try and emulate because the Korean audience seems to be open to the retro hip-hop feel. For K-pop bands trying to make it big in the US, however, I don’t see new jack swing being as successful because the Western music industry has changed a great deal from those times and traditional hip-hop beats aren’t as popular in the mainstream anymore.

So Seoulmates, do you think BTOB will continue in this direction? Does the retro feel of new jack swing do it for you, or not?

Inspire Me 1997 (Or Possibly Beyond)

Ah yes, a time of videotapes, bulky televisions and fax modems. Judging from how most have fallen in love with the very show that inspired the title of this article, most of us do have a soft spot for things from the past. A time when technology was thankfully a step behind, or the good feelings we have about a time when life was that little bit less fast paced or more innocent, make for such nice warm fuzzy feelings.

Viewed from another perspective though, the explosion in K-pop songs, dances or fashions which draw inspiration (or take liberally) from the past could just be another way of showing that trends are but cyclical in nature. A good example would be what was cool in the 80s, where large mobile phones, Filofaxes and expensive German cars were the things that were in vogue.

BTOB released their BTS video for “Second Confession,” the title track of their latest single.

With most of their scenes being outdoors, the members seem to be having a lot of fun while shooting the video.

Compared to their previously promoted tracks, “Second Confession” shows off the group’s cute side.

Best of Weekly Music Shows: 4/15 to 4/21

Welcome back to another weekly wrap up of our favorite music shows! This week, I can hardly believe there’s no B.A.P in sight, but I was pleased to see gems like M.I.B. and D-Unit light up the stage as well as my homeboy Jay Park rock out his latest and greatest single yet, “JOAH.” Here’s your look into the past week!

130417 Show Champion, D-Unit, “Thank You”

It’s nice to D-Unit tackles a softer approach to their promo material without sacrificing their core concept. I’m loving this gentler track and how the girls maintain charisma. Also, the outfits are to die for.

KpopCharts Update: 2nd Kimchi Clown

Eatyourkimchi LIKE A MAYN

BtoB “2nd Confession” – Vote for it Here!

BATOOBA!

If we ever do review this video or band, you better believe that you won’t hear the end of batooba. I refuse to call them anything else but that. BATOOBA! What’s with all the B name groups? What’s with all the alphabet names?

B to B
C Clown
D Unit
F Art

I feel like Kpop is being endorsed by kindergartens to try to teach kids their ABCs.

C Clown “Shaking Heart” – Vote for it Here!

Ok, so to provide a bit of balance here, Martina really this song, but I wasn’t blown away by it. Why? Spanishy guitars: that’s why! You might remember our review of MBLAQ’s Mona Lisa, where Martina really liked the song but I didn’t. Same thing here. Side note: does anyone else ever suffer from always mistyping MBLAQ as MBLAW? Personally, I think MBLAW sounds more badass. EM BLAOW! WHUT!

I did appreciate the dance sequence kinda silhouetted, where they retimed it all with fast and slow motion. That was cool. Otherwise, this wasn’t for me. But I’m only half of Simon and Martina, right? Maybe you side with Martina’s opinion more than mine?

Eatyourkimchi Crew “Eatyourkimchi Like a Man” – Vote for it Here!

What the eff? How did these guise make it on the charts? Do they even qualify as Kpop? Why not include Chad Future while we’re at it?

Ha! Anyhow, we included this because we thought it’d be funny. We didn’t think that it’d actually make it so high up on the charts. I guess…we might have no choice but to review it, right? Well, G-Dragon’s video is supposed to be out by the time this is published, and it’s gonna have a bunch of hours to demolish our KpopCharts, right? Kind of like how Psy got to the top in a few hours as well. I haven’t even heard GD’s song yet, though. Supposedly it’s really good live?

BUT IS IT AS GOOD AS EATYOURKIMCHI LIKE A MAN? Don’t be YG Biased, be SM biased. No, not SM like the famous, rich SM. SM like us SM, Simon and Martina, the not rich not famous brand. Support your local indie band! Well, we’re not really local either, but you know what I mean! Rookie groups deserve a chance too!

Side note: congrats to the winners of the K.Will CDs. Send us an email if you’re one of the winners (and don’t try to steal a winner’s CD, like someone did for the 300,000 subscriber giveaway. I’m side-eyeing you, cheater! You know who you are!)

BtoB is Back With a “Second Confession” for Spring

20130412_seoulbeats_BTOB2Spring is officially here and so are all the lovey-dovey K-pop comebacks. Infinite’s “Man in Love” and K. Will’s “Love Blossom” set the tone for the season and BtoB’s comeback “Second Confession” fits right in with these other happy-go-lucky, brightly colored MVs. “Second Confession” is a single released on its own, not part of a larger album or mini, but hopefully it will assuage BtoB fans desire for a full-fledged comeback. This MV combines a number of concepts, not sticking to a detailed plot, or exclusively doing fan-service, or just having dance sequences. Luckily, instead of this mish-mash of concepts making the video feel choppy it gives it a more sincere feeling and allows for more fun and humor than your typical K-pop romance MV.

Best Of Weekly Music Shows: 4/8 – 4/14

We’re now nicely into the second quarter of the music year, which means a mix of comebacks big and small, as well as Infinite and Lee Hi doing well at this time. Read on to find out what was worth a listen this week.

ZE:A Five’s cover of Busker Busker’s “Cherry Blossom Ending”, KBS Music Bank, 12th April 2013

The new sub-unit of ZE:A tries their hand at the spring favourite. It’s a pleasant surprise, as the guys do a decent job with the singing, but the star of the show would have to be Kevin and his piano.

Girls’ Day’s “Hug Me Once”, KBS Music Bank, 12th April 2013

I was never a big fan of the original, due to the highly processed vocals and instrumentals, as well as how the music video seemed to be an exercise in fan service. This acoustic version allowed me to re-look at this song. The acoustic guitar and the members’ vocals turn the originally grating song into a rather laid-back and enjoyable love confession call. Why did they not do this back then?!

BtoB’s “Second Confession”, KBS Music Bank, 12th April 2013

BtoB continues on with their late 90s-early 00s inspired pop sound. I am still liking the sound and theme of the whole song, and the whole retro theme has successfully separated them from their labelmates Beast. Now they just have to get out before the rush of imitators appear.

Davichi’s “Turtle” and “Just The Two Of Us”, KBS‘s Yoo Heeyeol’s Sketchbook, 10th April 2013

I know this was recommended the last time I did a weekly music wrap, but to hear the songs in a “completely as it is” setting with the backing music set just right allows for one to enjoy their vocals for what they are – great.

15&’s “Somebody”, Mnet’s M! Countdown, 11th April 2013

After the snooze-fest that was “I Dream”, 15& finally get some good material to back up their vocal chops. The song has a very nice light R-n-B to it, and could pass for something easily heard on Top 40 radio. Here’s to hoping they build on this foundation, and not flounder from then on.

And that is it for the week in music! What are some of your picks for the week?

BTOB’s Full MV for “2nd Confession” Released

It’s such a sweet song!

BTOB unleashed today, April 11, their full music video for their latest single, “2nd Confession.”

The music video follows the members of BTOB doing different things individually throughout the day, connected through a floating letter of confession that an unknown male is sending to his old girlfriend, asking for a second chance. In the second half of the video, the members gather together to sing and perform with acoustic instruments and the letter finally reaches its target, making it a happy end.

The song and music video show a side of BTOB that was not often seen before, as the members are dressed in soft and bright colors, looking lovely and fresh for the lovable song.

Listen and watch for yourself!

BTOB will be having their first comeback performance today at “M!Countdown.” Stayed tuned at Soompi for the update!

BTOB Teases with a Sweet “2nd Confession”

BTOB will be making a comeback on April 10 with a new digital single titled, “2nd Confession.” On April 8, they released a teaser video, filmed in the style of a live radio broadcast. The teaser features g.o.d. member Danny Ahn who is cohosting the radio show with BTOB member Minhyuk. Minhyuk sounds like an actual DJ reading a story a listener sent in, wanting to confess to his girlfriend. Danny Ahn looks more than comfortable in the role as he is currently an actual DJ on KBS Cool FM.

The teaser promises “2nd Confession” to be a sweet love song, making this the first time since the group’s debut that BTOB has shown a soft and romantic image.

Here is the teaser:

Best of Weekly Music Shows: 4/1 – 4/7

Welcome to another recap of the week’s music shows! This week, Infinite took home wins on all possible shows, beating out the likes of Davichi‘s “Turtle,” Lee Hi‘s “Rose,” and Busker Busker‘s “Cherry Blossom Ending.” K.Will, Lunafly, and the Electroboyz made their comebacks while GI, Delight, and Pure made their debuts. In addition, MBC aired their Korean Music Wave in Bangkok concert, bringing back a slew of performances from the past year. Below are my favorites of the week; leave a comment with yours!

K.Will’s “Lay Back” + “Love Blossom,” KBS Music Bank, April 5, 2013

K.Will’s contrasting stages were great to watch and listen to. I liked the little movements in the first one and the chair portions. The second was just so playful, and the trombones were a nice touch.
